Speaker
Dr. Sudip K. Ghosh, PhD is Research Assistant Professor at the Division of Digestive Diseases at the University of Cincinnati and Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Laboratory at the University Hospital.
Goal
After the completion of this training module, participants shall be able to:
- Understand and explain the fundamental physical principles of manometry and impedance catheters and their role in motility testing
- Differentiate between the two modalities (manometry and impedance) and understand their relative strengths and weaknesses
- Understand the advantages of high-resolution manometry over conventional methods
- Understand the indications for esophageal motility testing using high-resolution impedance manometry
- Understand the various data visualization techniques, including line plots, color contour plots and 3-D plots
- Identify protocols to be followed in performing a clinical motility study
- Analyze the studies using published analysis criteria using the MMS automated software and generate a report
Highlights
The highlights of this training module are:
- A thorough background of the conventional and high-resolution manometry and impedance systems shall be provided
- The common indications for performing motility studies shall be discussed
- A typical clinical motility protocol shall be described. The importance of delineating important anatomical and physiological features like the upper esophageal sphincter, the esophagogastric junction and the pressure inversion point shall be extensively discussed
- Methods to eliminate common errors during a study, like curling of the catheter in the esophagus and cardiac interference, shall be discussed
- Differences between performing studies in the upright and supine positions shall be discussed
- Several examples of motility disorders will be described and their clinical relevance shall be discussed
- A clinical study shall be analyzed to describe the important features of the analysis software
Target audience
Physicians, Nurses, Nurse practitioners, Physicians assistants and other health care professionals.
